Nancy Schmidt Toomey, age 87, passed away peacefully in her home on May 16, 2024. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Nancy was a devoted mother to her children Karen Sylvester and her husband Tony Sylvester, John Toomey and his wife Cheryl Toomey and Kathleen Bowerman. Her grandchildren AJ Sylvester, Joe Toomey, Charlotte Barren and her husband Zach, Morgan Trahan and her husband Gordon, Nick Toomey and Madison Koelbl were her pride and joy. She was a mother, grandmother and friend who was always there when needed offering support, wisdom and love. She will be missed immensely.
Nancy was born in Boston, Ma. She and her sister, Sue Fitzpatrick, shared a loving home with their parents, Ernest and Charlotte Schmidt. She graduated from Needham Highschool and the University of Maine. On August 29, 1959 she married John J Toomey Jr and they shared 63 years in a loving partnership. They moved to Canajoharie NY where they settled on Naja Farms. Nancy taught school for 34 years in New Britain Ct, Monterey Ca, Canajoharie NY and Sharon Springs NY. In addition to the positive impact she had on her many students, she was active in the community. She served as past president and member of the Ames Fire Auxiliary and Colonial Club. She was a member of St Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. In the past, she was a member of the Common Cents Investment Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Van Alstyne Society and Mohawk Valley Women's Club, in addition to being a Girl Scout Leader.
A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 2:00 at Our Lady of Hope, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339. Burial will follow at Ames Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Houghtailing and Hanley Funeral Home, Canajoharie. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in memory of Nancy please consider the Ames Vol. Fire Dept., 595 Latimer Hill Road, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
